What are the core features of a social network ? What makes up a social network, and what are the most important features.

The ability to make new social connections by searching through the membership of the network, there fore some sort of classification system of the members would be needed to allow users to decide which other users where relevant to their social desires and which weren't.
The ability to communicate freely with those other users, the more forms this communication takes (ie text and picture and video and therefore sound) the more 'free' it appears to be.

I'm not hugely keen on a user search, I'd rather it focus on stuff like groups where people can collaborate and find relevant people that way. Would be nice if the groups could filter messages based on range from the mesh node you're connected to (both a min and max range) so you could focus on local discussions or national discussions etc.
Would love it if there was some sort of news system so that people can "be the media", thus replacing mainstream propaganda with crowdsourced real news.

really kind of depends on your target group.. what works for some groups will not work for others so it should be adaptable is this just for social or for a networking work group stuff? etc..
