For a mesh net to be successful it's going to need good coverage = plenty of nodes, right? If so, are there enough of us to achieve that? Maybe in select locations, but I don't think there will be enough people in a country or city to get enough nodes for a proper mesh.
What if the network allowed node owners to post (legit) services to the local mesh? I'll try and explain...
I've been thinking a lot recently about how we can get communities back in control of the people that live in them. Currently big govt and corps are running the show, with no regard to the wellbeing of people or the environment. Communities aren't really able to stand up to them because they currently depend on those same organisations. That's got to change.
So, my idea is that communities will need to start producing their own food, water, electricity, and a bunch of other stuff. We need to become self-reliant, making the stuff we need to exist locally rather than relying on buying/getting it from nasty organisations.
Let's say someone sets up a tool library - like a book library, but for tools. They could publish that service to their node and define the range it should propagate to other nodes.
When people connect to the mesh and fire up their browser, the home page could then list the local services, events, resources, groups, and so on on the local home page.
As more and more services get uploaded to nodes, the mesh becomes increasingly appealing to ordinary folk. It helps build the local community through mutual benefit.
Now let's imagine a fracking company decides to descend on the community - the home page could alert all the locals and they can start taking action against that company.
As the thing evolves, other stuff could be added like public forums (ie. social democracy sort of thing, like they have in Turkey protests at the moment) allowing locals to directly participate in all decisions regarding their community.
Things like local news could also be published - for the people, by the people - turning the mesh in to the primary source of news for locals and pulling them away from corporate mainstream media.
Thoughts?
